County IT reports completion of major migrations, redundant internet and plan to upgrade Conservation Center connectivity

County IT staff reported progress on several technology projects during the March 11 Story County Board of Supervisors meeting, including a completed Office 365 migration, a virtual server hardware migration, activation of a Metro Net redundant Internet connection and plans to increase bandwidth at the Conservation Center in Hickory Grove Park.
The presenter said the Office 365 migration is “pretty much wrapped up now” and that the Metro Net redundant Internet connection was tested the morning of the meeting and handled failover as expected. The county also rolled out new ticketing and endpoint management software and installed network equipment to support the Attorney’s Office remodel.
On the Conservation Center, staff proposed moving from leased lit fiber to a standard internet connection to increase capacity from about 30 megabits to 1 gigabit while reducing cost “by half or maybe a third.” The IT presenter said that change will require additional hardware on the county side but would yield a substantial bandwidth increase and operating-cost savings.
Staff also said they will convert county fax lines to eFax (half the lines cut over the day after the meeting) and that the county sent “over half a million emails last quarter,” with about 46,000 inbound items flagged in RBL (registered blacklists) as spam reports. The board had no questions beyond praise for the work.
