Muskogee council approves cost-sharing for Smith Ferry Road gas-line relocation

The City of Muskogee City Council on March 10 authorized the city manager to negotiate and execute an agreement with Oklahoma Natural Gas to relocate a gas line needed for the Smith Ferry Road widening project.
City staff explained the relocation is required for the road project to continue and that the city will pay only for the portion of the line that must be moved. “We’re only gonna pay about a third of the total cost,” a city staff member said, adding that the exact share will be determined after geotechnical work in the project area and would be negotiated because precise costs are still fluctuating.
The staff explanation noted Oklahoma Natural Gas will relocate part of the line in coordination with the project; the city will assist with funding for the segment tied to the road work. The council had no further discussion and approved the action by roll-call vote.
The motion to authorize execution of the necessary agreement passed unanimously. The city’s final obligation will be set after the geotechnical report identifies how much of the line must be relocated and what portion of work the city must fund.
