The Revere Commission on Disabilities announced it received a $5,000 grant from Save the Harbor/Save the Bay’s Better Beaches program to expand the commission’s All Abilities Day Out at Revere Beach.
Chair Ralph told commissioners the award came from a competitive program; the commission received $3,500 for last year’s event and this year’s award increased to $5,000. He said the grant selection included many applicants: “there were a 68 organizations and individuals that applied this year,” and the commission was among the awardees.
Why it matters: the grant will be used to enlarge programming, add vendors and accessibility amenities, and broaden outreach to residents and regional visitors. The commission discussed logistical steps including submitting a permit request to the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and providing three potential dates for beach use.
Commission members discussed target timing and logistics. Chair Ralph said he planned to propose three dates and preferred a Saturday in August, tentatively the second Saturday, to avoid conflicts with other major beach events such as sandcastle contests. He emphasized the need for accessible parking and proximity for mobility vans. Members suggested tabling at other community events and reaching out to local media to boost attendance; one member suggested contacting regional TV outlets once dates are fixed.
Next steps: the chair will submit permit dates to DCR, confirm the chosen date with city calendars, and coordinate outreach. Commissioners asked for volunteer help with vendor recruitment and publicity. No formal vote was required to accept the grant award; the commission noted next steps and pledged to report back with confirmed dates.
