County engineer outlines spring road work: Highway 34 and 99 patching, Danville detour dust control

The Des Moines County engineer briefed the Board of Supervisors on an upcoming slate of road projects likely to affect travel in April and May.
The engineer said patching work on Highway 34 is expected to begin in April, followed by milling operations later. Patching on Highway 99 is scheduled to start the week after Highway 34’s patching, with a short pause on Highway 99 before milling begins. Most work will use one-lane closures; a few side roads may require full-day closures for limited periods.
The county is preparing a gravel-road detour for a Danville Road closure and plans to apply dust control to that detour in roughly two weeks, once weather looks more favorable. The engineer said broader dust-control applications will follow later in April or May. He reported the dust-control bid process produced four interested firms but only one bid was ultimately submitted and that the winning bid was a modest increase from the previous year.
The engineer also said bridge demolition is in progress as part of ongoing projects, and he has met with neighboring landowners and organizations about overlapping projects. He encouraged residents in affected areas to expect active work on the roads during April and May and said the county will limit full closures to short durations where possible.
