Design staff presented a plan for an outdoor patio and adjacent green space outside the student commons on March 10 and said the contract currently includes a concrete patio that transitions to grass; the design in the contract does not include benches or fencing.
Committee members discussed bringing seating back into the plan if funding allows. “Is there a consensus … that there should be some benches there?” a member asked; the committee agreed it would make sense to include seating and directed staff to explore options. Members also discussed earlier value-engineering decisions that removed a playground and noted that some smaller recess amenities could be reintroduced.
Several members asked staff to price a short list of options and to report back: (1) benches or tables (reusing existing benches where feasible), (2) a half basketball court, and (3) a Gaga pit or other inclusive, accessible play element. One committee member specifically asked staff to check accessibility for any proposed play structures.
Staff said budget remains flexible for some add-back items and that they would return with cost estimates for committee consideration. The committee asked that any proposed add-back be presented with pricing and accessibility details at a future meeting so members can decide whether to allocate remaining funds to seating or play amenities.
