Norwood school project reaches major interior milestones; 92% of construction budget committed

Project staff told the Norwood School Building Committee on March 10 that construction at the new middle school has advanced to key interior and exterior milestones and that the project is tracking to a conditional occupancy target on June 6.
Staff reported façade installation is nearly finished on the north and south elevations, gym wood flooring is complete and awaits sport-line painting and staining, auditorium paneling and ceiling work are wrapping up, and carpet installation has begun on the fourth floor. Above-ceiling inspections for the fourth, third and second floors have passed, enabling ceiling-tile work and punch-list activity in those areas.
On schedule and occupancy, staff said the project team and contractor are aiming for a substantial-completion milestone around June 6 that would be a conditional occupancy. That conditional occupancy would allow limited town access — for example, administrative areas for school staff and some large interior spaces — while exterior sidewalks, roadways and demolition of the old building continue into July and August ahead of students returning in September.
On budget, staff reported the committee has committed approximately $136,000,517 of the $147,900,000 total project budget (roughly 92% committed). Of the committed funds, about $105 million has been spent to date (about 72% of the committed total). At the time of the meeting staff reported approximately $11.3 million uncommitted in the budget.
The Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) reimbursement status was also updated: through reimbursement request 39 the project had received roughly $37.1 million, about 54% of reimbursement expected to date, and request 40 had been submitted in March for additional reimbursement.
Staff said technology and furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF&E) work is on track: the main MDF room and distributed-antenna-system work are on the near-term schedule, key furniture deliveries were planned for May and May 12 was mentioned as an early furniture delivery date, and mock-up classrooms and teacher training are being planned for May. Kitchen equipment delivery and setup were reported as underway.
Committee members were told the site contractor had returned after winter work paused, rooftop-unit mechanical inspections had occurred, and W.T. Rich had begun balancing at large-volume spaces such as the auditorium and gym. Staff reiterated that summer demolition and road-work sequencing hinge on removing the existing gym to complete an access road.
Staff will continue to report monthly with photos and progress updates and will provide schedule detail for transition meetings that will be held twice monthly as the team moves toward occupancy and final turnover.
