New Johnson County recycling facility nears completion; move targeted for late April–May

Wes, the construction representative, told the Johnson County Solid Waste Management District board on March 10 that construction of the new district facility is progressing and that weather has helped the schedule, but the project encountered a high water table during sewer work that required temporary dewatering.
"They're working on the exterior siding to get the building enclosed... the garage area heated floor slab is set to be poured within the next two weeks," Wes said. He said the office portion is enclosed, sprinkler installation has begun, and metal stud framing is underway.
Wes said the team installed temporary wells to lower groundwater so crews could complete the deep sewer lateral and anticipated pouring the heated garage slab within two weeks. Site work for parking and a deceleration/blister lane on the adjacent street will follow sewer work.
Jesse said the district plans to move the toxic box ahead of the building completion; staff aim to clear and move the box and related materials so the building can be readied for operations. Jesse said the talks box would be emptied by April 5 and that final clean-out and moves at the current sites would take place mid-April, with an anticipated public opening in May. "We hope to be very well open by May," Jesse said, adding that temporary certificate of occupancy and asphalt completion could affect exact opening timing.
Board members raised site condition concerns; one member called the active construction site the "ugliest" he had seen and urged better on-site housekeeping. Wes said the contractor would address debris and parking as dewatering and grading are completed.
The new facility address provided at the meeting was 2250 North Framingham Road. Wes said the project remained within the bond budget.
