Board restores March 20 as a student day after snow-related lost time

The Campbell County School Board voted on March 10 to revise the 2024–25 school calendar and designate Friday, March 20, as a regular school day for students to make up for roughly eight to nine missed days this winter.
Doctor Stanley, speaking to the board, said the system had missed about eight to nine full days of in-person instruction this year and that although the division used three remote learning days successfully, some high school, credit-bearing courses must meet seat-time requirements. He told the board that those courses “are supposed to get a hundred and 40 hours of seat time” and that the division may otherwise need to request a waiver from the state.
Board members acknowledged teachers’ concerns about losing a planned professional work day. One board member suggested creative classroom activities such as shared classes or assessments that might limit the teachers’ workload on the restored student day. After discussion, a motion to approve the calendar change was made, seconded and approved by voice vote; the motion carried.
The revision means students are required to attend in person on Friday, March 20. Schools and principals were asked to explore ways to preserve planning time for teachers where possible.
