Board hears state-level discussion on name-image-likeness rules for high school activities

Trustee Mike (surname not specified) reported receiving materials from the Wyoming School Boards Association and said Farmington High School Athletic Association and others are drafting bylaws to address potential NIL impacts. Officials noted Idaho and Colorado have passed similar rules and that as many as 19 states have enacted NIL provisions; the WHSAA draft policy aims to set guardrails to prevent conflicts and preserve amateur status while clarifying permissible activity.
Staff noted the district would need to update local procedures and notify parents if the WHSAA or legislature finalizes rules. The policy conversation also touched on sponsorships and fundraising and whether NIL practices could affect small-business sponsors that support school activities.
No board action was taken; trustees were advised the WHSAA expects a first reading of a draft policy in early April and staff will monitor developments and prepare guidance for parents and coaches if the policy advances.
