District to pilot CKLA and CommonLit 360 and seek stakeholder feedback for ELA adoption

District curriculum staff told the Laramie County School District #2 Board that they plan to present two literacy options for stakeholder review: CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts) for kindergarten through fourth grade, and CommonLit 360 for grades five through 12.
Staff explained procurement and grant constraints: the district must spend or relinquish certain grant funds by Sept. 30 and must preserve the grant’s required spending ratios across early childhood, K–5 and grades 6–12. Curriculum leaders said they piloted samples and found gaps in phonics coverage and will consider layering a phonics program (such as Reading Horizons) alongside CKLA if budget and grant splits permit.
Curriculum Director Tracy Schneider and literacy coaches reported that grade-level facilitators recommended moving forward with CKLA (vote 17–1 in the council) and that CommonLit 360 had broad support for grades five through 12. The board approved sharing materials with stakeholders and scheduled district review sessions at Burns, Carpenter, Pine Bluffs and Alvin on tentative dates. Staff will post resource materials, unit guides and vendor videos and solicit feedback during those sessions.
Trustees were asked to note that some CKLA materials and vendor samples were delayed and that final purchase decisions will require further cost analysis to ensure compliance with grant spending rules.
