Principal reports enrollment increase of three students; staff professional development and spring events detailed
Summary
Principal Brandon reported three new student enrollments since March 3, updated kindergarten and elementary counts, upcoming play performance, staff professional development, OG training plans and a community senior breakfast hosted by the PTO.
Brandon, the school principal, told the East Kingston School District board that three students began attending since March 3, bringing current counts to 16 kindergartners, 21 third-graders and 12 fourth-graders for a reported total enrollment of 113.
He highlighted the school play — Finding Nemo Kids — scheduled for the last weekend in March, and noted staff professional development plans. On March 11 (an in-service day) staff from across the SAU will gather for staff-led professional development at the regional high school, and a group of four staff members will attend the PLC at Work conference in June.
Brandon said summer planning is underway and that curriculum director Joe Lazier is organizing the district's annual summer institutes. He also reported that the district will have Orton-Gillingham (OG) training and certification in the building: one staff member in the building will pursue a two-year OG certification so the district will have one certified staff member for the building; additional staff will receive OG training to support K–3 and intervention work.
The principal thanked the PTO for hosting a senior breakfast attended by roughly 14 community members; fifth-graders participated as volunteers and brought positive feedback from attendees. He also noted that makerspace outreach prompted a public coffee-chat event scheduled for March 22 at 9 a.m. at the town library to explain the makerspace to the public.
Special-education service changes were mentioned earlier in the meeting; Brandon and other staff discussed BCBA services and provider changes for the upcoming year.
The board asked a handful of follow-up questions about where the three new students entered the grades and about OG certification timelines; Brandon clarified the distribution and confirmed the two-year certification timeline for the certified staff member.
