Ottawa County committee reallocates $100,000 to begin Grand Haven courthouse renovations

The Ottawa County Planning and Policy Committee on March 11 approved reallocating $100,000 from an existing capital improvement project to begin architect drawings and feasibility work for renovations at the Grand Haven courthouse.
County facilities staff told the committee the money will be used to create construction drawings and cost estimates so the county can later bid the work. The plan moves personnel within the building: the Friend of the Court is leaving the courthouse second floor, the prosecutor's office would move upstairs to gain space, district court probation would relocate to the first floor and satellite front-of-court staff would take the probation space. Staff said the changes aim to put district court services on one floor and improve day-to-day operations, while noting some new fit-out needs — for example, a drug-testing bathroom for probation on the first floor.
Kirk Tuhar, coordinator for Parks, Planning and Development, was not the lead on this item; county facilities staff explained the sequence and the committee asked for follow-up from the facilities architect at a later meeting for finer layout details. Committee members asked about the project scope and were told staff would follow up with the colleague who had more detailed knowledge.
The motion to reallocate the funds was moved and seconded and passed on a voice and roll call vote during the consent portion of the agenda.

The county will use the design-phase money to develop drawings and cost estimates before soliciting construction bids; staff said the work is intended to come from the existing $600,000 CIP allowance the county had set aside for renovations. No construction contract was approved at this meeting.
