Michigan House adopts resolutions recognizing March observances; excuses two members

House members approved House Resolution 31, introduced by Representative Miller, declaring March 2025 as Agriculture Month in Michigan; House Resolution 32, introduced by Representative Nyar, declaring March 2025 as Agriculture Appreciation Month; and House Resolution 35, introduced by Representative Aragona, declaring March 2025 as Athletic Trainer Month. The chamber adopted the resolutions by voice vote.
The resolutions are largely ceremonial recognitions. Representative Nyar argued the agriculture resolutions highlighted the size and economic importance of the sector, saying Michigan’s agriculture “is the second largest industry in the state” and citing figures discussed on the floor including “over $200,000,000,000” in economic activity and “well over 800,000 people” employed in agriculture-related work. Nyar added that Michigan has “over 45,000 farms” and asked members to “take a moment to thank the farmers that help put that food on your table.”
Two other measures were taken up but not adopted on the floor: House Resolution 33, introduced by Representative Sernigloo, which “calls on the United States Congress to reinstate United States Agency for International Development funding for research universities,” and House Resolution 34, introduced by Representative Bridal, which reaffirms support for “strong, fair, negotiated commercial relationships with North American trading partners.” Both HR33 and HR34 were referred to the Committee on Government Operations.
During the attendance portion of the session, Minority Floor Leader Fitzgerald moved to excuse Representatives Whitsett and Whitworth. Without objection, the motion to excuse them was ordered by the chair and the clerk recorded their absence as excused.
