City presents $2,110.50 in court surcharge funds to COPE House

At the Feb. 10 meeting, Mayor Jared Carr presented a check for $2,110.50 to Judy Kyle, director of COPE House, representing last year’s collection of a court surcharge authorized by state law to support operating expenses for shelters for battered persons.
Mayor Carr cited the state statute that permits a surcharge of up to $4 to be collected for court cases to provide operating funds for shelters. He told the council the surcharge cannot be collected in proceedings that are dismissed or when costs are paid by the state, county or municipality. The check amount was announced as $2,110.50 for the prior year’s collections.
Judy Kyle accepted the presentation and thanked the council and staff. The transfer was presented as an informational item; no council vote was recorded on the donation at the meeting.
