The Sandusky City Commission on March 10 voted to proceed with specifications and bidding for a proposed tennis courts project that staff estimated at about $800,000.
At the meeting, staff said the city and Sandusky City Schools are working together on the project; school representatives and the Sunniewski Education Foundation are contributing and bearing part of the overall cost. A commissioner asked whether the lighting would be available for the upcoming school season; staff said the courts would open without lighting for the girls’ season (practice typically begins late July or early August) and that lighting would likely be added later as part of a broader site-development or design-build phase.
Commissioners noted a private donation: Thor Works contributed a $30,000 cork-coating donation for the courts’ surface. Staff and commissioners said the project had been in discussion for several years and approved the resolution to advertise for bids and move the project toward construction.
