The Sandusky City Commission on March 10 voted to amend the city’s zoning code for manufactured homes to add minimum standards for the front elevation and to allow metal roofing materials.
Aaron Blair, the city’s chief planner, said the amendment—initiated by the Planning Commission—adds a requirement for a primary front entrance on manufactured homes and updates Chapter 1147.02 of the codified ordinances to accommodate current construction trends. Blair said manufactured housing can be a cost-efficient source of infill housing and that permitting metal roofing recognizes a common, high-quality material.
Commissioners generally supported the change. Commissioner Murray said the quality of manufactured housing has improved and that steps to make these homes fit neighborhood character are “a step in the right direction.” Another commissioner praised staff for acting proactively as manufactured housing gains market share.
The ordinance was adopted under suspension of rules (section 13 of the city charter) and approved in a roll-call vote by the commission.
