The DeKalb County Board of Zoning Appeals on an evening meeting approved a use variance requested by Cedar Creek Sawmill to operate a sawmill with lumber processing and wood-box manufacturing on a parcel north of County Road 56 near State Road 1 in Saint Joe.
The variance allows the petitioner to install a 150-by-100-foot wood shop (about 15,000 square feet), two 40-by-200-foot lumber storage areas, a 36-by-48 engine room, a 30-by-40 staff room and a 20-by-30 office, plus a sawdust silo and supporting gravel areas, according to the staff report presented to the board.
Planning staff presented the site plan and said the property is zoned A2 (agricultural), where the Unified Development Ordinance does not permit commercial lumber processing.
