The board moved March 10 to start work with McPherson & Jacobson on a superintendent search and to place a contract for ratification on the next meeting agenda.
Ben Johnson and Dr. Adam Clark, the firm’s California consultants, outlined a four-phase search process that includes: stakeholder interviews and surveys; recruiting and vetting candidates; a shortlist and board interviews; and an onboarding/goal-setting phase. Johnson said the firm recommends extensive front-end stakeholder engagement and background checks before finalists are presented to the board.
Dr. Adam Clark described the team approach the firm uses and confirmed McPherson & Jacobson’s practice of assigning two consultants to a search. He also said the firm offers a placement guarantee and will return to conduct a facilitated goal-setting session after the new superintendent begins, typically 45–60 days into the job.
Board members directed staff to have the firm begin outreach and preliminary work immediately; the board agreed to place the formal contract on the March 24 agenda for ratification. Trustees also asked staff and the consultants to coordinate initial dates for a board criteria session and stakeholder meetings, including opportunities for student, staff, union and community input.
Board members asked that the search be scheduled with flexibility to encourage broad participation. The consultants said they will provide an online survey and schedule virtual and in-person stakeholder sessions to gather input on the qualities the board and community want in a new superintendent.
