The Martinez Unified School District board on Thursday voted to approve several personnel and compliance actions as the district implements budget reductions and routine annual safety updates.
After reconvening from closed session the board reported a stipulated suspended expulsion for student number 2020 and then approved the recommendation by voice vote. The board’s roll call in open session recorded ayes from trustees; the chair announced the motion passed.
Later in the meeting, the board considered two related resolutions to meet required timelines for personnel reductions. Resolution 2025‑17 would eliminate or reduce certificated positions “to meet the Board’s approved budget reductions,” the staff report said; Resolution 2025‑18 would reduce classified services for the same fiscal reasons. Both resolutions were moved, seconded and approved by the board in public session.
Personnel reductions were presented by the district’s personnel office; staff and parents raised concerns at the podium about impacts on course offerings, particularly in secondary social studies. Alhambra High social studies teachers told the board that proposed cuts could reduce course offerings and elective options and complicate the addition of state‑mandated courses such as ethnic studies and financial literacy.
Board members said making cuts is undesirable but framed the votes as a fiscal necessity, noting the list of positions is based on current course requests and that the reduction list may change between now and May as resignations, retirements and other staffing changes occur.
The board also voted to adopt all school comprehensive safety plans to meet the district’s March 1 deadline; the plans were presented as annual updates from each school site and were adopted without substantive amendment.
