Commission asks council to proclaim April 25 as Arbor Day and expand school events

The Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission voted March 10 to ask city council to proclaim April 25 as Arbor Day and to support district‑wide events that will involve all five elementary schools.
Parks staff said the city secured funds through an urban forestry grant to expand Arbor Day activities beyond a single school. "We have funds to engage in a number of different activities to promote our urban forest, events like Arbor Day, educational outreach," Brian told the commission, describing an event toolkit that will provide supplies and a run‑of‑show for each school.
Schools will hold events on the last Friday in April; staff said the department will invite council members to attend one of the five school events and will ask city staff and community volunteers to help staff stations. The department expects roughly 400 students at the single-school events they have hosted previously and expects to expand participation district‑wide.
The commission’s motion to ask council to proclaim April 25 as Arbor Day and proceed with the event toolkit and volunteer outreach was moved, seconded and approved by unanimous voice vote. Staff said the proclamation is scheduled to be presented to council on April 15.
Staff also flagged a concurrent urban-forestry initiative and expects to bring a draft urban-forestry master-plan contract to council for adoption in April.
