Board approves permission to bid Measure M projects after discussion of priorities, Beatty gym and field repairs

The Buena Park School District Board voted unanimously March 10 to permit bidding on Measure M projects, a package of facility improvements the district previously identified for bond funding.
Trustees discussed project priorities before the vote. One trustee said the Measure M ballot language emphasized safety, STEM and general welfare rather than some items listed in the staff's project packet; the trustee asked the board to confirm its priorities and noted projected cost inflation could raise the package price above the $31 million currently cited. Other trustees emphasized safety and equity — listing improved camera and emergency systems, ADA and campus entry work, and upgrades to aging fields and tracks — and argued that field projects support both athletics and outdoor learning opportunities.
Members singled out the Beatty Middle School gym project, described by trustees as a multiuse facility that could include classroom space and community uses, and the need to repair badly degraded fields and tracks to reduce injury risk. Maintenance staff and trustees noted specific flooding and drainage problems at some campuses that would be addressed as part of field rehabilitation. Trustees also said prior modernization work at other campuses supports continuing a project sequence and that the bid step is consistent with a previously discussed plan.
After discussion the board approved moving the Measure M projects to bid, with a motion and second and a recorded vote of 5–0. District staff said the list and sequencing of projects will be revisited as design and cost estimates are finalized.
