County hears CHIPS housing grant update; staff says $300,000 award partially obligated and more applications planned

Deputy Director Barbara Reddick and program administrator Bridal Wade reported that the current CHIPS award for the county is $300,000 and that, as of the meeting, the county had obligated $143,474. Reddick and Wade said three homes have been rehabilitated under the program, one home is under construction, and two have been completed. Wade told commissioners two additional homeowners are waiting for work and that the program expects to complete a total of five properties by June 30, 2025.
Wade said the county planned to submit another application on Thursday to add homes under the current program and that staff had submitted an additional paperwork item the prior Friday that would increase obligations to about $159,000. Commissioners asked whether the county met a 50% expenditure threshold to qualify for another award; Wade said the submitted paperwork would put the county “well over that mark.”
Commissioners also discussed pursuing a larger funding round. One commissioner referenced a larger pot of money ($1,500,000) and another referred to a $500,000 figure; staff said they would verify the exact target and the correct program pot and grant amounts and report back.
