City recreation requests county proclamation, attendance for Stanley Floyd Invitational

Brianna Nixon, deputy director for the City of Albany Recreation and Parks, asked Dougherty County commissioners to issue a proclamation recognizing Stanley Floyd and to attend the first Stanley Floyd Invitational Track Meet on March 22.
Nixon said Floyd, a 1979 graduate of Dougherty Comprehensive High School and a former University of Houston standout, made a major contribution to track and field and that his family and other dignitaries will attend a banquet the prior Friday. "On March 22, we will be hosting the first Stanley Floyd Invitational Track Meet at Hugh Milledge," Nixon told the board and invited commissioners to the event, which she said begins at 9 a.m. She added that the event will focus on K–5 elementary competitors from across the region and that the public admission fee would be $8 with children 6 and under free and reduced admission for seniors; commissioners and invited officials would be admitted free.
Commissioners asked for event logistics and potential media coverage; staff said Floyd will be in Albany for an extended week with school visits and public appearances. County leaders suggested coordinating with the city's publicity and with other local initiatives such as the Harris Trail project to capture Floyd's contribution in local heritage efforts.
