The Sanford City Council on Feb. 4 approved a series of temporary street and parking-lot closures to support downtown events this spring and fall.
Parks staff presented four separate closure requests. The council approved a temporary closure of Trade Street in Jonesborough for a busking event on March 29; the event hours are planned 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the street closed 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. to allow setup and takedown. Parks staff said the event will include craft and food vendors and three bands.
Council members also approved multiple closure requests from Hugger Muggger Brewing (applicant Tim Emert) affecting the Cole Street parking lot: a partial closure April 11 for the third annual Blues, Brews and Barbecue (requesting the back half of the lot from 7 a.m. April 11 through 10 p.m. April 12) and full-lot closures for Carolina Indie Fest on May 23'4 (7 a.m. May 23 through 11:59 p.m. May 24) and again for a fall Indie Fest on Sept. 26'7. City staff said event organizers provided business outreach materials and flyers to downtown merchants.
Council members expressed support for spreading events across the city and praised parks staff and the events board for organizing activities that boost downtown retail and restaurants.
Each closure was approved by motion and voice vote during the meeting.
