Student representative reports college-career events and athletics successes at Fillmore High

Presley McClain, the student representative to the Fillmore Unified Board of Trustees, reported on recent student activities at Fillmore High School, highlighting college-and-career programming and athletic accomplishments.
McClain told the board that the high school’s college and career center has run after-school financial aid workshops for parents and students throughout January and February, providing help with FAFSA and related forms. She said the sessions run until 6:30 p.m. and aimed to reduce confusion for seniors and families.
On athletics, McClain said girls and boys soccer teams both qualified for playoffs and the girls’ soccer team won the Citrus Coast League championship. She reported that senior Angel Avila set a single-season school record in boys soccer with 21 goals. She also noted that senior Daniel Viveros committed to play football at Western Colorado University.
As part of student leadership outreach, McClain described visits she and the ASB president made to several elementary sites — San Quintana, Rio Vista and Piru — to talk with ASB students and younger pupils about school and leadership. She said students emphasized liking field and art programs, extra recess incentives for perfect attendance, smart boards and iPads, and that many younger students asked about future sports teams and clubs.
McClain also said she had finalized guidelines for a student committee to support ASB representation at the high school; those guidelines will be added to the ASB constitution and the committee will open for sign-ups.
