Scituate leaders launch enrollment-data phase for redistricting; public process planned

Superintendent Birkett told the School Committee March 10 that the district has begun the data-collection phase of an enrollment and redistricting plan intended to guide future school assignments and busing.

Birkett said the district has engaged a consulting firm for enrollment analysis and that consultants are collecting student counts, home locations and building specifications now through July. He said the district will form a stakeholder oversight committee over the summer, publish a website with materials and hold public meetings and opportunities for feedback. The superintendent said the goal is to have a committee vote “next January,” which would allow roughly 18 months afterward for transportation planning and family notification, though the meeting record did not specify the calendar year for that January vote.

Why it matters: redistricting and enrollment plans can change school assignments, affect busing and alter family planning. The district described the process as community-involved with multiple opportunities for public comment.

Committee members asked about how the consultants will count students not yet enrolled, such as younger siblings or children in local preschools. Birkett said he would check with staff (he referred questions to a Mr. Crawford) and that the district uses information from the clerk’s office, birth records and hospital sources as part of its enrollment estimation process. He said staff will provide additional detail to the committee and public as the data-collection phase proceeds.

The superintendent said the district will issue an email summary and post timeline materials for community review.
