The School District of New Berlin Board of Education approved staff compensation for the 2025–26 school year, adopted an updated employee handbook and approved the employment services report during its open session on the evening after a closed-session meeting. The board also approved the consent agenda and the 2026–27 school calendar.
The board moved into closed session earlier in the meeting under Wisconsin Statutes section 19.85(1)(c), (e) and (f) to consider approval of closed-session minutes from Feb. 10; employment performance and compensation matters for staff; the employee handbook; staff compensation for 2025–26; and a class-size update. The motion to go into closed session was made by Board member Miss Crosby and seconded by Board member Mr. Zielinski; the board took the vote by roll call and the motion carried.
After returning to open session, the board took a series of separate votes. The consent agenda — which included approval of the Feb. 10 minutes, financial reports and a field-trip application for BOA Grand Nationals — passed on a motion by Board member Mr. Bridal with a second by Mr. Hellmer. The board approved the 2026–27 school-year calendar on a motion by Mr. Hellmer and a second by Mr. Bridal. The employment services report was approved on a motion by Miss Spindler with a second by Miss Crosby. The employee handbook was approved on a motion by Miss Crosby and a second by Mr. Seidel. The board approved staff compensation for 2025–26 on a motion by Mr. Zielinski with a second by Mr. Bridal. Each motion passed following the board’s voice/hand vote in open session.
Board President announced the votes by voice/hand; no roll-call tallies for the open-session approvals were read into the record during the meeting. The superintendent and staff said the compensation and handbook updates were presented in closed session and returned to the board with recommended language and figures; board members did not reopen those items for extended public debate in open session.
The approvals finalize the district’s personnel and calendar direction for the coming year and allow district staff to proceed with implementation steps outlined in closed session. Future meetings were scheduled for April 14 and April 28; the board noted a possible cancellation of an interim meeting due to lack of a quorum.
