Softball organizers gain approval for $41,000 in field-safety upgrades at Orchard and Water Tower fields

Representatives for local softball presented a planned set of safety and playability improvements at Orchard and Water Tower fields and told commissioners they already have funding to proceed.
DJ (softball organizer) described three principal elements: extend and reinforce chain-link fencing at dugouts to better protect spectators and keep balls in play; construct a fenced, turfed pitching warm-up area with adjustable distances to serve multiple age groups; and repair and reinforce existing fence bottoms and shade canopies. DJ said the group has a contractor quote “just under $41,000” and that funds are available from the athletic club and fundraising.
Commissioners discussed coordination with utility owners: the Water Tower field has a gas main crossing that requires the gas company to approve any fence placement. Parks staff confirmed the improvements would be coordinated with the field assignment committee, and commissioners noted the changes would benefit all user groups including high-school junior-varsity teams. A motion to approve the improvements passed on a voice vote. Parks staff will coordinate permitting, locate utilities and schedule work with the contractor.
Commissioners thanked the volunteers for fundraising and said they expected the work to improve safety and durability at busy youth fields.
