The New Canaan Conservation Commission on Feb. 13 discussed creating a standing public-education calendar to reserve part of future meetings for invited speakers on local environmental topics.
Members proposed a recurring “speaker program” that would highlight town priorities in the Plan of Conservation and Development (POCD) and connect residents with experts. Suggestions for upcoming months included a March session on bird migration featuring Frank Gallo of the New Canaan Nature Center, later sessions on dark skies (with Sarah Carey and Lights Out Connecticut), firefly season programming in late spring, and an earlier-than-usual fall tree-planting planning discussion.
Commissioners discussed time limits for presentations (proposing 10–15 minutes for a speaker plus Q&A) and outreach channels, including the town newsletter and library programming. Staff noted some limits on collaborative offline editing of the calendar because of open-meeting law (FOIA) constraints and advised working with town staff to make any calendar publicly editable if appropriate.
The commission asked staff to reach out to potential speakers for the March meeting and to place a speaker slot on the March agenda for anyone the commission confirms.
