Chamber of Commerce gets unanimous approval for three street closures for 2025 events

Laura Budd, representing the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce, briefed the Police Commission on Feb. 19 and requested street closures for three large public events in 2025: a sidewalk sale on Saturday, July 19; a Halloween block party on Sunday, Oct. 26; and a holiday stroll on Friday, Dec. 5.
For the sidewalk sale Budd asked the commission to close Elm Street and half of Forest Street from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 19; if the commission approves, she said she will seek state approval to close Main Street from Burd Street to East Avenue for that day. For the Halloween block party she requested Elm Street between Park and Main from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; for the holiday stroll she requested Elm Street between Park and Main from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Budd said the chamber plans to hire three officers for the sidewalk sale (one stationed on Fourth Street to preserve resident access) and two officers each for the Halloween block party and the holiday stroll. She thanked police, fire and Department of Public Works staff for prior coordination and said DPW has staged large trucks at intersections in recent years to protect pedestrian areas.
Commissioners moved to approve all three requests as a group; the motion was seconded and carried unanimously.
The chamber will complete any required state permitting for Main Street and coordinate final traffic and public-safety details with police and DPW ahead of each event.
