Steering committee readies ‘October for Design’ and America250 events, seeks broad nonprofit participation

The committee reported that a letter inviting nonprofits and Chamber members to join was distributed through the Community Foundation and the Chamber, and that organizers asked participants to finalize dates by July 15 for inclusion on an updated October for Design website and a printed handout. “We’re asking anybody who’s interested from those groups to attend a meeting at the March where we will take them through some of the planning,” a steering‑committee member said.
TDAC reported that First Selectman Diana Carlson has agreed to set aside some economic development funds for an updated October for Design website and for a printed program, pending final dates. The Nikkina Museum (referenced in the meeting) will manage a shared calendar to coordinate events and avoid schedule conflicts, and templates will be provided to streamline event listing submissions.
Committee members discussed format options for October programming, including hosting a monthlong slate of events this year rather than a single weekend or two-weekend cluster, to give space for varied activities and to avoid heavy overlap among participants. Critical already scheduled dates on the calendar include the Waveney Park Arts Festival on Sept. 20, Modern House Day and Symposium on Oct. 18 and Grace Farms’ 10th anniversary benefit the same evening.
Organizers are also coordinating with townwide America250 planning (the federal/state commemoration referenced in the meeting) and parallel initiatives including Earth Month activities and school‑led contests between Flag Day and Veterans Day. Steering‑committee members asked for additional participants and noted the plan to promote a cohesive itinerary that could attract regional and out‑of‑town visitors.
