Natrona County High School Junior ROTC presents battalion activities and student achievements to trustees

Cadets from the Mustang Battalion of the Natrona County High School Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps presented their program’s activities and community service record to the Natrona County School District #1 Board of Trustees.
Lieutenant Colonel Mark Johnson, senior army instructor for the NCHS JROTC, introduced five cadets and said the program combines classroom instruction with a "very rich and deep layer of extracurricular activities" that are largely cadet‑run. "The cadets are always willing to lend a helping hand, whether that's in our school community or in our community at large," Johnson told trustees.
Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Christian Garvin, battalion commander for the Mustang Battalion, told the board that nationwide JROTC participation correlates with higher GPAs, better attendance and reduced disciplinary actions, and he described local activities including color guards, wreaths events, assistance at football games and a Red Cross First Aid and CPR class offered this year.
Other cadet speakers outlined unit roles and teams: Sydney Doane described leadership opportunities and teams such as drill, rifle and living history; Ashton Taylor, cadet command sergeant major, described the drill team's competitive appearances and color‑guard work; Cadet Major Corinthia Bates discussed the rifle team’s emphasis on focus, safety and travel for competitions; and Maddie Felton described the living history team’s cannon demonstrations at varsity football games and participation in Memorial Day ceremonies.
Board members thanked the cadets and their instructors. Trustee Hopkins called JROTC "a valuable program" and multiple trustees praised the cadets’ presentations and community service. The board recognized the unit’s role in student leadership development and extracurricular engagement.
The presentation concluded with the cadets and instructors receiving trustees’ appreciation; the board moved on to other agenda items afterward.
