Rockcastle County Schools introduce 'Portrait of a Rocket' student-profile initiative

Rockcastle County school presenters introduced "Portrait of a Rocket," an initiative asking students to create personal profiles that document six qualities educators say define a well-rounded graduate: active collaboration, resilience, critical thinking, effective communication, responsible citizenship and innovative leadership.

"It's called Portrait of a Rocket," said Starla Binge, a school staff member. Susan Norton Casey, also identified as a school staff member, described the effort as a vision for the kind of individuals Rockcastle County students will become and outlined the six qualities the program highlights.

The presenters described how the profiles will ask students to show examples of those qualities in their school or community work. "As part of this initiative, students will create a personal profile showing how they've demonstrated each of these qualities in their own lives," Binge said. The presenters emphasized the program is intended to capture learning beyond academics and to encourage students to reflect on challenges and leadership opportunities.

Presenters read brief descriptions of each quality: "active collaborators" who work effectively with others; "resilient learners" who learn from setbacks; "critical thinkers" who analyze and solve problems; "effective communicators" who express ideas and listen actively; "responsible citizens" who show integrity and respect; and "innovative leaders" who inspire and guide change. Several of those phrases were offered as direct summaries during the presentation.

The presentation did not specify a timeline for rollout, the exact grade levels that will participate, or how the profiles will be used for assessment or reporting. Presenters said only that they are "thrilled to introduce" the program and invited the community to "stay tuned to learn more about the portrait of a rocket and how you can support this vision," language used near the close of the presentation.

No formal votes, policy adoptions, funding amounts or implementation deadlines were presented during the remarks. The announcement appeared as an informational item: staff described the program goals and requested attention and support but did not record any formal action or next steps with assigned timelines.
