Jim Wells County discusses nuisance abatement procedures, emphasizes education before citations

Jim Wells County Commissioners Court on March 10 revisited the county’s nuisance abatement order and discussed outreach and enforcement steps to address illegal dumping, tire piles and overgrown lots that county officials said are creating fire hazards and degrading neighborhoods.
Commissioner Gonzales (identified by several speakers) said many residents in unincorporated areas do not know the county’s ordinance exists and urged an education-first approach. “A lot of people are not aware that this ordinance is in place…we wanna make them aware that it’s there before we start giving out tickets,” he said. County safety staff displayed photos of problem properties and said staff had already issued verbal 30-day requests to several property owners; if voluntary compliance does not occur, the abatement officer can issue citations and, ultimately, the county can abate and seek fines or court remedies.
Jose Gonzalez of the county safety department described the planned enforcement sequence: education and verbal notice, written notice, abatement officer action and citation as a last resort. He said the department is concentrating initial efforts in densely platted neighborhoods where homes are close together and the risk to nearby houses is greatest. He also noted there are ongoing regional efforts to bring sewer service to nearby areas, and that some parcels might later be eligible for different infrastructure options.
Speakers urged making the nuisance ordinance easier to find on the county website and suggested posting notices at community hubs and on social media. The court did not adopt new penalties at the meeting; officials said they would emphasize outreach and coordination with city partners and volunteer personnel to address the problem proactively.
