The Design Review Commission voted to approve changes to the principal building and accessory structure at 1009 Fair Street, a circa-1920s Craftsman bungalow in the Hincheyville National Register District. Staff presented the application and recommended approval of cedar shake gable ends, a 64-square-foot accessory-structure addition, and a driveway alteration to straighten the driveway to the street, subject to conditions.
Elizabeth, preservation staff, told the commission the building has come before the DRC during its restoration and noted that on Oct. 2024 the reconstruction of the accessory structure and a roof-raising were previously approved. The current application includes changing gable-end cladding from lap siding to cedar shake, adding 64 square feet to the accessory building, and straightening the driveway.
Ben McCrary of Chisel Workshop, the applicant’s representative, said he had nothing to add beyond staff’s analysis and was available to answer questions. Commissioners asked whether the accessory structure would remain in garage use or be adaptable to dwelling use; the applicant said the intention was flexibility to be either.
A commissioner moved to approve the application with staff conditions; the motion was seconded and the commission voted in favor. Staff required that final window specifications be provided to preservation staff prior to permitting and confirmed that conditions addressing materials and compatibility would apply.
The commission’s approval covers the cedar shingle gable ends, the 64-square-foot accessory addition, and the driveway alteration, subject to the standard conditions noted by staff.
