Staff said Lakes Region typically runs one weekend collection at each site and would add a second weekend for Alton, matching the town’s usual two collection weekends. Residents from Alton would be allowed to use neighboring satellite locations free of charge.
Administrators also told the board that residents sometimes face higher fees when classified as small‑quantity generators and that service pricing under the LRPC arrangement closely matches the town’s prior program. Staff reported contract and hauling costs were the main budget driver in previous years.
Because scheduling for collections is already underway, staff asked the board to approve a prorated membership payment for the current fiscal year to ensure collections are scheduled. The board approved a motion to accept a prorated FY25 membership fee of $3,123 with a town agent authorized to expend the funds; the board separately approved a $9,841 appropriation for the two household hazardous‑waste collections with an agent authorized to expend.
Board members directed staff to present a fuller recommendation — including potential rejoining of LRPC, program benefits, and a proposed funding source — after consulting the planning board and reviewing the annual subscription and multi‑year costs.
The short‑term decisions ensure hazardous‑waste collections remain available to residents this year while elected officials seek broader input on whether to reestablish a longer membership with Lakes Region Planning Commission.
