Public works staff updated the Orting City Council on Feb. 19 about a budgeted purchase of a multipurpose lift vehicle intended to replace a 1995 bucket truck. Staff reported a final price of $228,558.50 for the vehicle and $14,662.05 for hydraulic tools, which together remain below the approved 2025 budgeted allocation of $250,000.
Director Ryan said the new vehicle is a smaller, more maneuverable truck than large utility contractor rigs and that the hydraulics will reduce need for lane closures and outside contractor work. He characterized the purchase as a significant operational upgrade that will produce a payback on outside-contract savings over a multi-year timeframe.
Councilmembers asked questions about size and capability; staff described the vehicle as a single-operator bucket on a dually-chassis truck suitable for right-of-way work and storm response. Several councilmembers signaled support and recommended placing the purchase on the consent agenda.
What happens next: staff will bring the purchase ordinance/contract to the consent agenda for formal approval at a subsequent regular meeting.
