Senate adopts resolutions honoring Hoosier Boys State and Hoosier Girls State

Senator J. D. Ford introduced Senate Resolution 16 and Senate Resolution 21 on the Senate floor, saying, "Before you today I have Senate resolution number 16 and Senate resolution number 21. And these resolutions are honoring the Hoosier Boys State and Hoosier Girls State." The chamber voted by voice; the clerk announced the resolutions adopted.
The resolutions describe the Hoosier Girls State program as "designed to educate Indiana's young women in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of good citizenship by getting involved in the process of government," and say the American Legion Auxiliary helps select participants. The resolution text identified Trine University in Angola, Indiana, as the host site and said participants learn about the execution of city, county and state government while fulfilling graduation pathway civics requirements.
Senator Bray, who spoke in support, said the programs were personally important to him and recalled participating as a student. "They kind of divide everybody between two parties, and people run for town council and mayor, and all they have a state convention, and people run for governor," Bray said, describing how the program simulates government roles. He also noted family ties to the programs: his grandmother worked with Hoosier Girls State and Girls Nation for many years.
The Senate's statement on Hoosier Boys State noted the program's national history, saying the Boys State concept was created in 1935 and that Indiana held its first Boys State in 1937. The resolution text said the program builds leadership skills by creating a functional state government modeled on Indiana's political process; it also listed Trine University in Angola as the host.
Both resolutions direct that copies be transmitted to the programs. No amendments or roll-call tallies were recorded in the transcript; the clerk reported adoption after a voice vote.
