Central York Curriculum Committee reviews K–8 art maps, refers AP courses to full board

The Central York School District Curriculum Committee met March 10 and reviewed draft art curriculum maps for kindergarten through eighth grade and two high school courses — AP Art: 2‑D Design and AP Art History. After a brief discussion and positive remarks from committee members, the committee agreed to refer the materials to the full school board for review.

Committee members praised the draft maps as a strong start. “I really, really enjoyed reading these maps … it’s just wonderful,” said a curriculum committee member. Another member said her child had benefited from the district’s art program and called the maps “a sampling of the excellence that’s actually out there.” A third member added: “Kudos to the curriculum writers.”

Dr. Ucheff introduced the agenda item as the committee’s first look at the district’s K–8 art curriculum maps and two high school course proposals, and said additional high-school art courses will follow for committee review. Committee discussion during the meeting was limited to general commendation and anticipation of the remaining high-school materials; no substantive edits, funding requests, or curricular changes were made at this session.

The committee’s action was a referral: members agreed to send the draft K–8 art maps and the two AP course proposals to the full school board for review. The agreement was recorded by voice and characterized in the meeting as committee consensus; there was no roll-call vote recorded on the referral.

The referral advances the review process but does not adopt the curriculum. The full school board will receive the materials and may accept, amend, or request further modifications. The committee noted that additional high-school art course materials remain to be presented at a future meeting.
