Contractor loops water line to keep 5900 West bridge project on schedule; county contingency remains for 4100 North work

County staff briefed commissioners on a change order documenting a force-account water-line relocation required for the 5900 West bridge component of a two-bridge project with UDOT. Contractor work to loop the water line so the bridge foundations could be built cost about $33,000.
Staff explained the original combined bid for the two-bridge project was roughly $2.7 million and included a contingency of about 15% (approximately $400,000). After the $33,000 water-line loop and an anticipated wall rework (estimated at an additional ~$10,000), about $360,000 of contingency remained. Staff said they do not anticipate further issues on the 5900 West work but noted that the contractor will soon move to the 4100 North bridge in the valley, where the critical-path schedule runs from March through July and the same contract and contingency will apply.
Staff also noted that the county’s financial exposure to contingency costs is limited by the project match percentage; the county is participating at an estimated 6.7% share of the contingency expenditures. Staff intends to fund the county’s portion from Prop 1 funds and said they will finalize signatures and Masterworks account setup so the change order paperwork can be completed.
