The Assembly Transportation and Independent Authorities Committee amended and released Assembly Bill 5134, which requires certain providers of transportation services to develop and publish route schedules.
The committee removed an earlier requirement that NJ Transit publish route schedules and schedule changes for each bus, rail, or ferry route at transportation stops and stands. Sponsors said the measure aims to improve clarity about routes and posted schedules for services such as jitneys and other locally operated providers so that riders can better anticipate service and reduce crowding at stops.
Assemblywoman Linda Carter, sponsor of the bill, said making route information readily available would help manage flows at stops and improve rider awareness. The committee voted to amend and release the bill; roll-call votes recorded one abstention from Assemblyman McGuckin, with other members voting in favor. The amended bill was reported out of committee and will proceed through the Assembly’s legislative process.
