At the start of citizens' comments, Smithfield resident Brett Renfro urged council members to consider how recent property evaluation notices and the appeals process could affect residents during budget discussions.
Renfro said he is a county employee retiring this month and described the need for the town to be “good stewards of the taxpayers' dollars” while maintaining services. He asked the council to keep valuation appeals and possible changes in revenue “on your radar as you enter into your budget session” and urged the council to aim to remain revenue neutral so increased property valuations do not impede residents’ daily lives.
Renfro acknowledged the town provides services he and other residents use and said he appreciates the challenge of balancing revenue and service levels. He said appeals deadlines are approaching and that municipal residents are affected by county appraisal processes as well.
The council heard the comment during the citizens' comment period and did not take formal action on the matter during the meeting.
