Lake Havasu Parks & Recreation announces program schedule updates and names new recreation superintendent

At its Jan. 27 meeting, the Lake Havasu City Parks and Recreation Advisory Board heard Director Gabby Vera deliver the department’s director’s report and introduce Marcus McIntyre as the city’s new recreation superintendent.

Vera said registration is open for youth basketball leagues for third through sixth graders. She reported 40 participants registered for the third- and fourth-grade league and 73 for the fifth- and sixth-grade league; third- and fourth-grade games begin Feb. 14 and run through March 14, with games at 5:30 p.m. on Fridays. Vera also outlined upcoming aquatics offerings including February swim lessons on Monday and Wednesday evenings, special tribal-school lessons Wednesday mornings, multiple instructor trainings in mid-February and a planned pool reopening with normal hours on Monday, Feb. 17 (Presidents' Day).

She listed community-center events scheduled in February, including a community health fair, concert-series dates and the Lake Havasu City Disc Golf Club’s open tournament at Sarah Park Disc Golf Course on Feb. 1–2. Park maintenance updates included effluent-water applications to the island ball field (requested by sanitation), a replaced walkway light at Lion’s Dog Park at London Bridge Beach, repaired parking lots at North London Bridge Beach, and new pickleball light poles at Sam Memorial Park. Vera said staff continue work on the aquatic center’s front lobby and on a framed office space.

Vera also reported continuing work to renew and update an intergovernmental agreement with the school district to expand field access for local youth and adult leagues; the amendment is under review by the school district and will return to the city council for approval if the district signs off. She said the updated IGA is intended to increase available practice and game space for groups such as the Havasu Lions and local little-league organizations.

On personnel, Vera introduced Marcus McIntyre as the city’s new recreation superintendent. Vera said McIntyre brings 14 years of experience in recreation management and program development, including work in Miami-Dade County parks and presenting at the 2023 National Recreation and Parks Association conference. No formal hiring vote or council action was recorded at the advisory-board meeting.

Board members did not take public comment on these items during the director’s report.

The board listed its next regular meetings as Feb. 24 and March 24.
