Officials say storage and staged lake levels are central to Lake Okeechobee recovery

South Florida Water Management District science and operations staff and Army Corps experts told the County Coalition on Feb. 21 that lowering Lake Okeechobee into a seasonal “ecological envelope” and adding storage north and south of the lake are key to restoring submerged aquatic vegetation and improving estuary conditions.

The ecological envelope is roughly 15.5 to 12.5 feet (stage) across the year, officials said, a range they described as balancing marsh inundation at the high end and submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) growth at the low end.

The ecological envelope matters because it controls the mix of marsh and submerged vegetation and the productivity of the lake. Lawrence Glenn, water resources director at the South Florida Water Management District, said managers aim to keep stage within that pathway so “we'll be fine,” and that staying in the envelope supports prey production in marshes and the nursery function of SAV.
