Mike Patterson, clerk support, told Lawrence County commissioners on Feb. 18 that his office has suffered repeated plumbing and flooding incidents since 2009 and asked the county to examine a redesign to reduce future occurrences.
Patterson said the episodes have caused repeated disruptions to office operations and called for a more durable fix rather than repeated short-term repairs.
"I thank Dylan for he really went to bat to make sure somebody got in here pretty quick," Patterson said, thanking staff who responded after the most recent incident. He said the county’s maintenance staff and outside contractors Roto Rooter and Servpro assisted in stabilizing and cleaning the office. Patterson told the board: "When it hit your employees, it's time to stand up and say, something's gotta be done."
Commissioners and staff acknowledged the building’s age and the challenge that presents for permanent repairs. Commissioner comments in the record note repeated plumbing work performed by maintenance staff, and the transcript records that a staff member named Corey has replaced plumbing components in the affected area multiple times. One commissioner said, "We'd like to make sure that something does happen and we wanna make sure that we get it right," and commissioners indicated they planned to discuss options with maintenance and facilities staff.
Patterson said he did not want cosmetic fixes applied before the underlying problem is fixed: "I wouldn't want to put it down either unless it was fixed." Maintenance staff and commissioners discussed reviewing the building and possible corrective options; no formal motion or funding decision to redesign or replace fixtures was recorded in the transcript.
The record shows the board and staff thanked maintenance personnel for a quick response and agreed to continue investigating a longer-term fix. The meeting proceeded to other agenda items and later approved a motion to meet in executive session on a personnel matter.
No schedule or funding source for a redesign was provided in the meeting transcript, and the record does not show formal authorization of repair funds at this session.
