Lucas County proclaims February as American Heart Month

The Lucas County Board of Commissioners voted to proclaim February as American Heart Month following a presentation from Mindy Hartwick, executive director of the American Heart Association in Northwest Ohio.
Hartwick told the commissioners that heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States and described local outreach efforts to increase bystander response and prevention, including hands-only CPR education, nutrition guidance and equipping schools with automated external defibrillators (AEDs). "Heart disease is the number 1 killer of Americans," Hartwick said, adding that the association works locally to make sure people "know their numbers" and are prepared to respond to cardiac events.
After the remarks the board's presiding commissioner moved to adopt the proclamation. The clerk called the roll; Commissioner Gerken and Commissioner Lopez recorded affirmative votes. The proclamation was presented to association representatives and a photo was taken at the dais.
The proclamation recognizes the month as an opportunity for education, increased CPR training and community outreach; the presenters asked the county to help amplify those efforts in schools and senior programs.
