Supporters said the contract is overdue and recognizes the demands of firefighters amid rising cost of living. Councillor Cronin praised the union and thanked fire and police personnel for recent emergency response efforts, saying the contract is “well deserved” and noting the difficulty of negotiations given recent inflationary pressures.
Council discussion noted one substantive operational change: a move to 24‑hour shifts, a schedule the union advocated to help attract and retain personnel who now travel longer distances to work. City staff and the solicitor were thanked for completing the negotiations; the council approved the accompanying pay ordinance and authorized the council chair to sign once legal review is complete.
