Tecumseh Board narrows school-of-choice for grades 1'5, keeps kindergarten and 6'12 open

Superintendent Hilton presented a plan to keep young-fives and kindergarten open (unlimited) and to remain unlimited at grades 6'12. To better control class sizes at the elementary level, the board approved limiting school-of-choice at grades first through fifth only. Under the plan the district will set a 30-day application window for limited grades (May 1 to May 30) and must notify applicants within 14 days of the window's close, a timing requirement the superintendent said is mandated by state law.
Hilton told the board the limited-window approach allows the district to plan staffing and sections while still accommodating school-of-choice students: families already residing in the district do not need to reapply, and current school-of-choice students may remain through graduation. The policy also includes priority for siblings of currently enrolled students and a procedure to open a second window in July/August if space remains.
The motion to adopt the school-of-choice plan was approved by roll-call vote.
Why this matters: limiting first-through-fifth grade applications will let the district control section counts and staffing while keeping early-grade enrollment flexible to help stabilize long-term enrollment, district leaders said.
