Junction City approves $10,000 grant for 30th Juneteenth celebration

Guy told the commission the association is seeking the funds to “make our thirtieth Juneteenth celebration the best” and to support entertainment that will increase attendance, vendor sales and outreach. Guy said, “the $10,000 investment in entertainment for the Juneteenth celebration is not merely an expenditure, but a catalyst for positive and transformation.” Bro Curry said the investment would “bring the community together” and enable expanded marketing and social-media outreach.
The association said the event is produced by the local nonprofit Junction City Juneteenth Community Association and would include educational programming and vendor opportunities for local businesses. Commissioners asked about the group’s nonprofit status, marketing plans and prior requests; a commissioner confirmed the group is a 501(c)(3). Commissioners also asked whether the group had pursued funding through local radio marketing grants and the Convention & Visitors Bureau; the presenters said they had not yet applied to the CVB but were seeking a meeting with the bureau’s new director.
During the discussion one commissioner noted the city’s usual practice of providing in-kind support for community events. City staff confirmed that past city assistance has included in-kind services from Public Works and the Parks Department to help run events, and that such support is typically offered alongside any monetary grant.
A motion to approve the grant was moved and seconded on the floor. When the commission voted, commissioners responded “aye” and the chair declared the motion carried.
The commission did not attach additional conditions to the grant in the public record. The Juneteenth presenters said they would use funds for entertainment and marketing outreach intended to attract a broader audience and to support local vendors.
