Council approves two murals for downtown Cherryville; no city cost

The Cherryville City Council unanimously approved two mural proposals for downtown properties after the Architectural Review Board recommended them.
Downtown Director David Day told the council the ARB reviewed the applications and approved forwarding them for council final approval. The board considered two designs; one mural originally proposed for another building will instead be painted on a separate downtown building ‘‘beside the dish box,’’ Day said. The proposed military- and veterans-themed mural was designed in five sections to fit the chosen wall.
Day and ARB member Vicky Sperlin presented images in the agenda packet. Council members asked about pedestrian sightlines and traffic distraction; presenters said they had checked placement and received owner permissions. The city will not pay for the murals: presenters said the projects are privately funded and that there is "no cost to the city." After discussion, the council made and approved a motion to accept the ARB’s recommendation.
The council also discussed adding pedestrian amenities and lighting near the murals to enhance viewing, and staff said they would continue coordinating with property owners on any power or lighting needs.
